I finished my teen magazine illo last night and I was able to see the sun today! What’s that? You say commercial artist don’t go outside? You say it’s to scary out there? Maybe that’s why I feel like I haven’t seen the sun in 3 weeks. But seriously I don’t think it rained a drop all day and I was able to enjoy it. Hooray!
Here is a detail of the painting as a sneak-a-peek.

On walks through the shops of my sea-side town I always ogle over the antique and handmade jewelry. They’re not really anything that I would buy for myself but I just like to look at them. So unique and tiny and perfect! A few weeks ago I went into the Pickle Pot in Salem and there was a very friendly woman there who had some really cool Steam Punk pieces. She was kind enough to show me her work bench where she made the jewelry and walked me through the steps. I was so excited to track down my own materials and try it out for myself.

I’m hooked! I work on them in steps in my downtime and drying times. Printing and coating the images and then cutting and sealing them into the bezles. Putting the resin on takes the most time as it’s time and weather sensitive. It was pretty hard to track down the bezles (mostly because I didn’t know the word that they were called). I finally found a really cool vendor on Etsy who sells them at a very reasonable price for the quality. When I got the first delivery I discovered I had been sent some free samples as well as my order! Hooray! There was also a card with the artist’s personal website and a 10% off code. Check out www.dimestoreemporium.com and if you’re going to purchase anything use the promo code 62791. I just got my second order today and once I’m done my current painting I’m going to resin a lot more!

Wow! I’ve been painting like a fiend! Here is a little painting I did for my friend Stephanie. She’s an amazing person who is always up for a spot of Joe at Jaho and a walk around Salem. Her amazing way with words always has a way of making me envious.
I’ve also finished the next sketch for the teen mystery series in SHINE brightly and I’ve started the painting. It’s so nice to be able to concentrate on characters and atmosphere like this. My studio space has become quite the siren leading me into a time warp. I’m having so much fun lately. Discovering podcasts has really changed things up for me as well. I wish I had found Ninja Mountain a few years ago. They just had their 100th episode! They make me giggle and oddly enough I feel more confident while I’m painting and listening to them and other visual art podcast conversations. I also like Big Illustration Party Time and Escape from Illustration Island. Anyone who has anymore should send them my way!
Lets see… what else? Oh! I got some postcards ready to send out tomorrow and I ordered some more. These are extra large and chalk full of magical goodness. I chose the mermaid recipe piece for the front. I’d like to do more work like this one. So whimsy!
